Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

1 Corinthians 5:7–8 (KJV)

Jesus Our Passover

Cleansed by His Sacrifice

The Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 5:7–8 unveils a profound truth about Christ’s role: “Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us.” Just as Israel removed the “leaven” or yeast from their bread for the Passover festival, we’re called to purge sin from our lives.

Jesus Christ, our Passover Lamb, was sacrificed to cleanse us from sin. His death wasn’t just an event but the foundation of our salvation and newness of life, freeing us from sin’s stain and curse, with the eternal death it brings.

A Call to Purity

The passage continues, urging us to live out this truth: “Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.” The Feast of Passover represents a change of lifestyle.

We’re to reject the “old leaven” of malice and wickedness in sinful and corrupted conduct and embrace the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth, in the purity that Christ’s sacrifice enables. His blood motivates a response, a commitment to live differently.

Rooted in His Redemption

Christ’s sacrifice redefines us. As the Passover lamb’s blood shielded Israel from the destroyer, Jesus’ blood delivers us from eternal judgment. We’re not bound to old ways. His death broke sin’s power, and His resurrection merits us life.

This isn’t about earning salvation through works but living in the freedom He purchased. Sincerity and truth become our worship, honoring the Lamb who gave Himself for us.

Anchored in Christ

Today, anchor yourself in Christ’s sacrifice. Purge the leaven of sin, whether bitterness or deceit, and walk in sincerity. Let His Passover enable you to live purely, trusting His blood covers all. Celebrate Jesus by living as one redeemed by the blood of the Lamb.
