For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 (AV)
In this post we are going to discuss the subject of the divine power of the Word of God in the context of the modern world and modern Christianity. This is a highly important topic especially in today’s crumbling world where the Word of God is desperately needed in society and ever so underestimated in the mainstream church and Christian world.
Tired of God’s Word
One heartbreaking observation I have made over the years in churches and among Christian groups in the west is that Christians are just tired of God’s Word. Many just find the Bible boring and are unable to relate to it at all. This is a common occurrence today and is evident in the way that churches and many Christians find themselves searching for other sources of stimulation within Christian contexts. Somehow the Word of God is not enough anymore for many Christians and has become powerless. It seems church is way more fun with numerous mind-numbing activities, pop performances and comedy skits to hold the attention of restless, overstimulated churchgoers.
This has come about by a few different reasons, but primarily because the preaching of God’s Word has lost it’s impact due to the systematic weakening of confidence in the Bible and by extension, dead and dry teaching from those who are not anointed to preach who are only parroting denominational creeds and cliches. I mean, why wouldn’t someone get bored and tired sitting under that kind of powerless rhetoric? And how are we expected to impact the world for Jesus when we ourselves are not impacted but are bored and tired?
We’ve Got it Wrong
We couldn’t be more wrong about God’s Word. I am not talking about being bored of it which is obviously wrong, but we have got it wrong about the importance and function of the Bible in our spiritual lives and overall life direction. This very important directional focus has been all but lost. In other words, we have lost sight of what the Bible is really for and it’s priceless value. How can we go from on the one hand, our founding fathers and Christian pioneers zealously affected by the Word of God, pioneering nations and declaring Gospel truth across the seas at the threat of death, to on the other hand, the masses now being bored and tired with the Bible turning to trivial entertainments and spiritual junk food to find satisfaction? It’s staggering. The Bible for many Christians is powerless today and that needs to change.
A Right Focus
It’s highly important for Christians in the modern world to have the right directional focus and vision when touching the Scriptures and biblical disciplines. We need to see the Bible for what it really is as crucial and central to our functional lives, enabling us to live in a manner which is purposed around building the Kingdom of God in proclamation of the Gospel. In order to do this we need to possess the correct vision and attitude towards the Scriptures, which will create personal impact within us, empowering us to build the Kingdom of God through the power of the Holy Spirit. Old views and mentalities of mundane religiosity, pew sitting and academic impotence in the Christian life must be done away with and only a revelation of the Scriptures and their power can achieve this.
5 Ways to Unlock The Power Of God in Scripture
I’ll now proceed to share five brief points which will help us gain a more powerful perspective of God’s Word and give us the ability to unlock its power for today’s context.
1. See the Word of God as Prophetic
“We have also a more sure word of prophecy…” 2 Peter 1:19
Modern churches and Christian education facilities now teach that God’s Word is an educational history book rather than what it really is–a prophetic guide book for God’s people. Certain historical events over the modern era caused theologians and Christian teachers to shift their view of God’s Word from sacred and prophetic, to mundane and historical. The truth is, the Bible is not just a history book of past events, but it is a book of prophecy and prophetic revelation of the Almighty God, as all the Biblical material from OT to NT is focused into the prophetic revelation of God through the Messiah; and when touching history today, the Bible continues to reveal the unfolding of future events in the context of Jesus the Messiah and Saviour of mankind. Viewing the Bible as a an history book forces us to focus backwards and analyze it academically and scientifically, blinding us from it’s power making it impersonal.
Step 1: Shift your view and now see the Bible as a prophetic document revealing the power of God. This will bring the Bible to life in your hands revealing it’s intrigue, bringing the impacting presence and power of God into your life today.
2. Approach the Word of God as Holy
“And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures…” 2 Timothy 3:15
It is all to common today for the Bible to be treated as something very ordinary and not at all special. Do we realize that the Bible is the very Word of God and is sacred and holy? Do we understand the Bible refers to itself as as the “Holy Scriptures”? Or do we just treat the Bible as if it is any other common book? The latter is true today as we have been taught to handle it that way in modern times. The academic poking and prodding of the Bible has gone on too long that now anybody can simply choose to translate, interpret, abuse and twist the Scriptures any way they like. In other words, we do not respect the Scriptures any more and believe we can do what ever we like with them and approach them without fear. The truth is, the Bible is to be revered and feared as holy, not mistreated, or handled with a casual attitude, but it’s to be regarded with the utmost importance as precious and of the highest value and to be handled with great care and caution. Mishandling the Word of God can bring serious divine consequences and those who violate its holiness will suffer judgment.
Step 2: Approach the Word of God with fear as holy and not ordinary. This will instill a special reverence and respect for God and the Scriptures within you, and will draw you powerfully closer to the Scriptures and to the Lord Himself increasing the presence of God in your life.
3. Understand the Supernatural Power of The Word
“And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.” Luke 4:32
Traditional denominations have done a good job suppressing the supernatural nature of the Bible. When it comes to modern Christianity, spiritual and supernatural things are often approached with fear and suspicion, being labelled as “superstition” or “fanaticism” rather than approached with faith and humility. They introduce us to a supernatural reality open to the experience of man and reveal to us certain forces and powers not able to be understood through the five senses. Modern thinking and education has taught us to not pay attention to anything we cannot explain through scientific methods and this mentality has rubbed off on the traditional church when it comes to the Bible. The truth is, the Bible is really a user’s manual of how to interact with the supernatural and spiritual realities which surround us. They teach us how to literally walk with and experience God through faith in Christ and by extension participate in the unseen world. This is far from today’s common religious view of of the Bible as a scholarly informational text.
Step 3: Let go of the lifeless mentality of modern theology. Be open to the supernatural power the Word of God reveals through all it has to offer from dreams and visions, to angelic visitations and divine healing. Be supernaturally minded.
4. Put the Word of God to Practical Use
“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only…” James 1:22
Most of the time in modern church thinking we approach the Word of God as an informational text book, rather than a practical working guide book. In other words, we have been taught to view the Bible as something to know, rather than something to do. Of course we need the knowledge of the Bible, but biblical knowledge must lead to practical action to truly unlock its potential and power in our lives. Some Christians are happy with the “do-nothing” attitude approaching scripture, but that just won’t cut it in today’s world, with today’s needs and under today’s pressures. The first thing we need to do is drop the mentality that we cannot take action upon what the Word of God teaches. Somehow we have received the idea that we actually cannot do what the Bible says, which is opposite to the truth. Through the power of the Holy Spirit we can carry out everything God requires of us and when we gain this revelation and then walk in faith, we then see that doing the Word of God is exciting, vibrant, powerful, active and we experience the manifestation of God’s presence and Kingdom.
Step 4: Read the Scriptures with intention to act on what you read. Start by exploring singular Bible verses such as one of the Proverbs and literally do what it says to activate the power of the Word, then repeat – the results will speak for themselves.
5. Grasp the Word of God With A “Faith Mentality”
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 10:17
Mainstream academic theology has taught us to approach the Word of God with skepticism and doubt rather than with faith and confidence. The idea of “proving” God’s Word against modern academic and scientific standards has caused an overall skeptical approach to be taken towards the Scriptures and that by believers. This is now the attitude in which the Bible is preached, taught and studied in the mainstream, which impedes faith and discourages spiritual growth. We now need to be painfully convinced of the Bible’s truth through strenuous argument, rather than simply receiving its truth with ease upon a plain revelation of what it says. This attitude instigates doubt and hesitation upon the plain revelation of the Bible and is counter-productive to faith, leaving believers often confused with many questions, rather than satisfied and confident having received faith. What is needed is to break this faithless mindset and attitude and now simply believe the Word of God as the Word of God without all the painstaking mental effort. The Scriptures must become the place of solely feeding and building faith, rather than the place of satisfying external standards imposed upon us by society, church or otherwise.
Step 5: Handle the Bible with only a faith based attitude. Breakdown the “skeptics mentality” by ceasing doubtful investigation of the Bible, replacing your complex faith with simple faith. This will dramatically increase your confidence and faith introducing the power of God in Scripture to your life in a new way.
Unlocking the power of God in Scripture is not difficult if we understand what the Bible is and what it does. In the end, by unlocking the power of God in Scripture we are simply intensifying our revelation of God in Christ and now stepping into experiential Christian life with true biblical purpose and impact. God desires us to partake in the building of His Kingdom and declaring Gospel truth to the world–we can do this easily with strong faith in the Scriptures and the power of God.
